Moira O'Grady
The shapes and colors of leaves, birds, nests and stones have never failed to inspire me, and Georgia O’Keeffe’s beautiful painting of a clam shell and seaweed compelled me to create more voluptuous renderings of seashore motifs. My pieces are hand-built and emerge from wet or leather-hard clay that has been incised, sprigged, cut, molded, added-to or subtracted-from, using sculptural, woodcutting and painterly techniques. Coloration—with all its attending challenges and joys—is usually an underglaze-glaze combination, with an occasional dash of oxides.
